I can’t sleep!

I wait in vain for sleep to come.

But sleep it skipped me, I get none.

My mind is running one big race.

My body slumps, canโ€™t keep pace.

Sleep wont find me in the night.

Restless slumber nerves so tight.

So I just lie here counting sheep.

It grows so dull, it makes one weep.

One wall over sleep did score

Caught my neighbor, hear him snore.

That rumbling snore it seals my fate.

It shakes my walls and keeps me wake.

I like this very much! It really captures the frustration of insomnia. There are a couple of places where the language makes me think English is not this person’s first language. “But sleep it skipped me. I get none.” And the last line. However, this seems to add to the charm.

Thanks for the compliment, as far as the English language is concerned, I think the problem lies more in the fact that spending over 20 years abroad in non English speaking countries tends to make you rusty. Also you tend to adopt a “specialist” vocabulary and grammar so that you are understandable by people who do not have English as their fist language. After several years you tend to get confused yourself as to what is proper English and what is not.

Also you would be surprised at how many times using reverse grammar is the only way of making yourself “understandable” when abroad.

insomnia sure isn’t, Luckily it doesn’t happen to often. But in this particular case I have to thank my neighbor for providing me with the inspiration for that poem. He sure set the stage for me.
