My mom and I were playing
cards one evening last fall
and talking about her trip
to Florida the following week.
I said that in five years
we’d be going with her
since I have just
four more years to teach.
She said she doubted
she’d still be here
by that time considering
how she’d been feeling lately.
The wine tasted
a little less sweet
after that and I wanted
to lose the game on purpose.
I wondered how it felt
to know you only had
a few years years left.
Are you ready?
Do you regret all
the things you’ve never
done? Do you sit on the couch
and wait for the late afternoon
shadows to swallow you?
Or do you play cards
with your daughter
and drink a glass of wine
and beat the pants off her?

Nice family poem and written with love throughout.
Yes, there are things in life that I regret not doing, but there are many things that we did as a family that I would much rather remember.
I sure am ready! can imagine the thoughts that bulldozed your minds as you penned them down! Wonderful!
There comes a time in everyone’s life when they have to face their mortality, and we always have those questions of ‘what if’ and ‘if I had only ____’. I work in the funeral business, which makes me think of these things every day.
